The Arts (students must successfully complete a minimum of 2 credits in the arts to graduate)

 

Acting (CNJ11, CNJ21)

Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders Course fulfillment:  1 year of Acting satisfies the NYS arts requirement for graduation. Acting students will be introduced to basic techniques and character analysis through the use of Improvisational Theatre, Rasaboxes, Monologue Work, Comedy and Dialogue Work.  In addition, students will collaborate with the Playwriting class to perform monologues and scenes written by their peers performed during Theatre Showcases.  Students will also participate in theatre excursions throughout the year and have the opportunity to attend the New York State Theatre Education Association student conference.  The playwriting class will be working with Theatre for a New Audience in the spring.

 

Digital Art (AUN11) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders Course fulfillment:  1 year of Digital Art satisfies the NYS arts requirement for graduation. Digital Art is a course designed to give students a first-hand experience in learning how to use digital cameras and editing software to build a portfolio of digital artwork.  The rigorous curriculum begins with the basics of digital media, careers in the field, and a hand's-on Photography unit.  Students practice how use all settings on Canon DSLR cameras.  The second semester begins with Adobe Photoshop training.  This software is an industry standard for photo editing.  Following training on use of Adobe Photoshop, students will learn how to operate Adobe Illustrator and In-Design.  The latter-part of the second semester focuses on how students can work as a ‘shop’ and produce various digital projects such as: music-mixing, digital photography, printmaking, business design and advanced photography and photo editing.  At the summation of this course students will produce a portfolio of digital artwork.  Students gain skills that are prerequisite to careers in the digital arts. Opera (UKN11, UKN22) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders Course fulfillment:  1 year of Opera Seminar satisfies the NYS arts requirement for graduation. Love, romance, betrayal, murder, marriage, misery, happiness, jealousy, delight, honor, and so on. What intense and powerful emotions these are.  Opera Seminar is an exciting opportunity to explore a magnificent theatrical art that includes orchestral playing, singing, set design, costuming, and dramatic staging.  We study seven or eight operas over the course of the year, and we look at them from the foregoing perspectives, noting how composers use music and language to create emotion and to tell a vibrant story. Most of the operas we study are accompanied by a trip to the Metropolitan Opera to see the opera performed by some of the greatest singers in the world.

 

Playwriting Performance (CWN11) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders Course fulfillment:  1 year of Playwriting Performance satisfies the NYS arts requirement for graduation. Playwriting Performance focuses on expanding writing skills for the dramatic arts. It is taught in a college workshop format that is very writing intensive.  As well, this is an emphasis on the art of re-writes and peer editing.  The course looks at various playwrights, ranging from classic American plays to modern and inventive techniques. We study Neil Simon, Woody Allen, Samuel Beckett, Tennessee Williams and many other famous playwrights. The course also consists of going to see different performances throughout the year on and off Broadway. You will explore script techniques, characters, monologues and produce a ten minute scene throughout the course. Playwriting also collaborates with the acting class to create, produce and perfect a theatre showcase in January and May.

Studio Art (ANN11) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders Course fulfillment:  1 year of Studio Art satisfies the NYS arts requirement for graduation. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of art making and art appreciation through the study of the Elements of Design. Through the study of these basic building blocks students will increase their own ability, learn about the history of art, discover famous works of art, be introduced to famous artists and discuss the role of art in society. Students are not graded on technical skill but on their own individual effort, growth and participation.

Painting (APN11) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders Course fulfillment:  1 year of Painting satisfies the NYS arts requirement for graduation. Prerequisite:   1 year of

Art History (AHS21U, AHS22U) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 80 or better on the NYS ELA Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as 2 NYS arts credits.

Art History: Prehistoric Through Gothic This survey of art from pre-history to the late Middle Ages builds visual understanding through close study of individual works of art in various media, including painting, sculpture and architecture. Connections between art works and their cultural contexts are emphasized, as are the cross-cultural exchanges which have enriched the diverse artistic traditions of Europe and the Americas. Museum visits are required.

College Algebra and Trigonometry (MQS11UMM) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 80 or better on a NYS Math Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as 1 NYS math credit. This course will start with a review of basic algebra (factoring, solving linear equations, and equalities, etc.) and proceed to a study of polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. These functions will be used in applications involving simple mathematical modeling where students will engage in inquiry activities aimed at improving critical thinking skills

 

Critical Thinking (EQS11UCT)

Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 65 or better on the NYS ELA Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as a NYS English credit toward graduation. Critical Thinking explores the process of thinking critically and guides students in thinking more clearly, insightfully and effectively. Concrete examples from students' experience and contemporary issues help students develop the abilities to solve problems, analyze issues, and make informed decisions in their academic, career, and personal lives. The purpose of this course is to equip students to recognize and analyze argumentation as it occurs in a variety of contexts such as editorials, discussions, speeches, argumentative essays, and philosophical texts. To accomplish this, we will study the components of good arguments, different types of arguments, common ways in which arguments can go wrong, and techniques of criticizing and constructing arguments

 

Elementary Statistics (MQS11UST)  Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 80 on one NYS Math Regents exam AND a grade of 65 or better for 3 years of high school math courses (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry) Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as a NYS Math credit toward graduation. This course presents the fundamental concepts and computational techniques of elementary statistics. Topics studied include statistical graphs, measures of central tendency, standard deviation, percentiles, probability, binomial and normal distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and linear correlation/ regression.

 

English Composition (EES87U) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 75 or better on the NYS ELA Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as a NYS English credit toward graduation. In this course, students focus on writing as a process to create correct and effective expository essays in response to culturally diverse sources. Emphasis is placed on using various methods of organization appropriate to the writer’s specific writing context. Students use a variety of rhetorical strategies, research methods and documentation procedures in their essays.

 

General Psychology (SQS11UPY)  Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 80 or better on the NYS ELA Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as a NYS Science credit toward graduation. This course will expose students to a broad overview of general psychology.  Certain topics will be covered in more depth as these are more conducive to class discussion and our lives outside of the classroom.  Various psychological perspectives and paradigms will be presented, along with relevant research that has accompanied their historical development and current trajectory.  Major topics to be covered include personality, psychological disorders, biology of psychology, learning, memory, intelligence, perception, human development, research methods, social psychology, and health psychology.  

 

Global Politics (EQS11UGP)  Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 75 or better on the NYS ELA Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as a NYS English credit toward graduation. This course will investigate the dynamics of global politics among nation states and other actors in global affairs. After an introduction to the international system and globalization, the class will study major international relations theories and use them to analyze current and past events in global politics. The course will explore various global issues including war, terrorism, genocide, security, peace-building, development, human rights, free trade etc. Students will focus on case studies of their choice.

 

Literacy and Propaganda (EES88U)  Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders with a score of 65 or better on the NYS ELA Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  Successful completion of this course will give you college credit from LaGuardia Community College as well as a NYS English credit toward graduation. This course introduces students to methods of understanding a highly developed and pervasive discourse: propaganda. Emphasis is placed on reading materials that use the persuasive and argumentative language of politics, advertising, cultural discussions and the media. Political speeches, essays, editorials, and articles are used to enlarge the student’s experience with the materials and tools of propaganda. The student will acquire the intellectual framework and sophisticated level of literacy needed to recognize and respond to the aims of propaganda.

 

Electives

 

Leadership (GLS82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88) Eligibility:  All Students Leadership is the Academy’s student government organization. The Student Government is for students who are interested in putting their efforts and energy into good deeds and overall making every students' experience at the Academy a great success. The Student Government is made up of a Congress of representatives from all four grades and elected officers of President, Vice - President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

 

Common Core Study Skills for College (GQN11QCC, GQN41QCC, GQN42QCC, GQN43QCC, GQN44QCC) Eligibility:  All Students Common Core for College Preparation is a year-long course that focuses on equipping students with skills they will need for college.  Interdisciplinary by nature, during this course students will develop their critical reading and writing skills while studying and reinforcing key concepts found throughout their other courses.  This course is intended to support students’ academic success in high school, as well as build on competencies that are required for college level curriculum.  

 

Community Service (GQS21) Eligibility:  10th, 11th, 12th graders Course fulfillment:  10th Grade Minimum Requirement = 20 hours, 11th Grade = 35 hours, 12th Grade Minimum Requirement = 45 hours Community Service and Volunteerism are significant aspects of the college application and scholarship process therefore, the Academy of American Studies as a college preparatory high school, requires all 10th, 11th, and 12th graders to complete a minimum community service hour requirement.  Students will benefit from the opportunity to make meaningful connections and enrich the lives of others by providing service for individuals or public organizations for the benefit of the community.  Service should be performed outside of school hours unless under the supervision of a staff member.   Service credit can be awarded to active members of student organizations and teams.


English (students must successfully complete a minimum of 8 credits in English in order to graduate. CUNY standards require at least a 75+ on the English Regents.)

 Freshman English (EEN41, EEN41QC, EEN41QT) Eligibility:  9th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS English credits towards graduation. In Freshman English students are introduced to the literary elements and techniques and analyze how authors use them to convey meaning. Students will read and examine a variety of literature including Shakespeare, Greek and Roman mythology, Fredrick Douglass, Harper Lee and others. We will consider such questions as what are universal human experiences, what makes someone a hero and how do our concepts of a hero change across time and place, how is our humanity defined, and how can we confront denials of our humanity.

 Sophomore English (EEN42, EEN42QC, EEN42QT) Eligibility:  10th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS English credits towards graduation. Students will read a variety of texts in different genres which will include non-fiction, novels, poetry and drama.  Texts include Shakespeare’s Othello, Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Spiegelman’s MAUS.   There will also be a multi-genre unit on New York City. They will continue to analyze how authors use literary elements and techniques to develop meaning.  Students will explore themes in all these works that relate to the nature of good and evil in the world, making personal choices, and the concept of the Anti-hero.  The New York State English Regents and the Common Core English Exam will be given in June of Sophomore year and is a NYS graduation requirement.

 

Junior English (EEN43, EEN43QC, EEN43QT) Eligibility:  11th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS English credits towards graduation. Junior English is all about American literature. Accordingly, a year-long inquiry examining American dreams (i.e. how they shape American values and how they correspond to the American experience) will be undertaken. Course material begins with the American Transcendentalists, but most of the year is spent reading the novels, plays, and poetry of 20th century American authors. Works studied might include: the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome, the poetry of Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, Arthur Miller's The Crucible, and Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

AP English Language (EEN43X) Eligibility:  11th graders Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  This elective course satisfies two English credits towards graduation. AP English Language is the study of English literature through syntax and diction. The focus of the course is writing and language, with an emphasis on tone. The course culminates with the AP college exam in May which provides college credits. Course materials focus upon a range of texts including the NY Times, poems, articles, speeches, plays and novels. There is an emphasis on argumentative speech and debate as well. Some of the novels covered during this course are The Scarlett Letter, Ethan Frome, The Great Gatsby, The Crucible, Turn of the Screw, and many works published in the Norton Anthology of American Literature. The focus of the course through each text is how the author creates rhetoric and tone through language. 

Senior English Options: AP English Literature (EEN44X) Eligibility:  12th graders  Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  This elective course satisfies two English credits towards graduation. AP English Literature is a rigorous college-level course covering a broad range of genres and literary periods as found in a typical college introductory course. One of the many goals of the course is to hone speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills so that both verbal and written articulation of analysis and/or interpretation is cogently explained, clearly transitioned, and masterfully executed.  Students will be taught various critical theories that, when applied to texts, will deepen, complicate, and layer their understanding--not only for the text at hand, but also the larger text that is the world. It is important that a student taking this course be a self-motivated learner as students are expected to devote time outside of the classroom to studying at least one to two times the amount of time spent in class per week. Journalism (EEN44QJ) Eligibility:  11th and 12th graders Course fulfillment:  This elective course satisfies two English credits towards graduation. Journalism: Students will become working journalists, gaining insight into the art of the interview, research, writing and photography. You will be studying the work of others and finding your own journalistic voice. Our main objective will be to publish this work in the school newspaper, The Academy Gazette. While examining various journalistic mediums, we will brainstorm story ideas, debate about what is newsworthy and decide what is appropriate for our audience. We have a partnership with Baruch College’s NYC High School Journalism Collaborative.  NY Times Reports visit our classroom and we have gone on trips to People Magazine and Time Magazine.  Students will take leadership roles in the class and you will receive two credits for the year.

ESL (EEN11, EEN11QC, EEN11QT) Eligibility:  English Language Learners Course fulfillment:  English credit is awarded based course and level. The ESL class focuses on developing the students’ reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.  Students will keep a vocabulary log of all their readings, read short stories, poems, essays, fiction and non-fiction stories/articles.  Students will write personal and analytical essays in response to their readings.  Formal and informal assessments are used to measure students’ progress.  These assessments include homework, tests, quizzes, essays, journals, group projects and class participation.  Our goal is to become better writers/readers/listeners and speakers of the English language.  The ultimate goal is to successfully pass the NYSESLAT test given in the spring semester.  Students will work with Theatre for a New Audience during the spring semester.


Foreign Language

French Level 1 (FFN31)    Spanish Level 1 (FSN31) French Level 2 (FFN32)    Spanish Level 2 (FSN32) French Level 3 (FFN33)    Spanish Level 3 (FSN33) Eligibility:  All grades. Course fulfillment:  Students must successfully complete 2 credits of foreign language to graduate and 6 credits of foreign language to complete the sequence and receive an Advanced Regents Diploma after passing the LOTE exam. In Level 1 Foreign Language, students will learn about self-identification in many aspects using the present tense. In Level 2 Foreign Language, students will be able to speak about themselves in further detail, and also be able to describe past events using both the preterit and the imperfect tenses. In Level 3 Foreign Language, students will be able to express themselves in the target language to provide and obtain information, resolve conflict while acquiring more cultural knowledge.  Students will take the LOTE exam in June following level 3.

AP Spanish Language (FSN33X) Eligibility:  Students who have finished Spanish Level 1 & 2  Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  1 year of AP Spanish Language satisfies 2 credits needed to complete the Spanish language sequence and can be taken in lieu of FSN33. Students will be able to develop proficiency and integrate their language skills, using authentic materials and sources.  The goal is for them to be able to convey meaningful messages following the appropriate norms of spoken language as well as grammar and vocabulary.  They will also have the opportunity to experience their culture as they learn about Hispanic art, music and literature.  The course is meant to be comparable to first or second year college courses that focus on speaking and writing in the target language at an advance level. 

 

Math (students must successfully complete a minimum of 6 credits of math as well as pass one Regents Exam to graduate with a Regents Diploma.  Passing Geometry and Algebra II Regents is needed for an Advanced Regents Diploma. A special mathematics designation is awarded to students who pass all three high school math courses and receive a minimum of 85 on all three math regents.  CUNY standards require an 80+ on at least 1 math Regents)

Integrated Common Core Algebra (MEN11, MEN11QC, MEN11QT, MEN22, MEN22QT, MQN11) Eligibility:  9th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Math credits towards graduation. Integrated Algebra:  Topics include a study of functions (linear, quadratic, absolute value and exponential), coordinate geometry, systems of equations, right triangle trigonometry, elementary probability theory and introductory statistics.  Use of the TI-83/84 graphing calculator is integrated within the instruction.  This course culminates in both the Common Core aligned State examination and the NYS Regents Passing one state examination in mathematics is a NYS graduation requirement.

Common Core Geometry (MGN11, MGN11Q9M, MGN11QC, MGN11QT, MGN22) Eligibility:  9th & 10th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Math credits towards graduation. Geometry is a mathematical system that allows students to use deductive reasoning to form relationships relating to both abstract mathematical ideas and real-world scenarios. This course gives students the chance to act as mathematicians and argue conclusions developed by the fathers of mathematics. Critical thinking is essential in Geometry, and students will be given the opportunity to develop and expand this skill. The following topics will be covered: logical reasoning and formal proofs; properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles; triangle similarity/congruence and right triangle relationships; analysis of area and volume; properties of two and three-dimensional geometric figures and solids; and geometric constructions and transformations. Passing this exam is a NYS graduation requirement for a NYS Advanced Regents Diploma.

Intermediate Algebra & Trigonometry (MRN11, MRN11Q10, MRN11QB) Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Math credits towards graduation. Eligibility:  10th-12th Graders The Algebra II and Trigonometry discipline complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of Algebra I and Geometry. It emphasizes finding solutions for and graphing, polynomial functions, inequalities, systems of equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational functions, and trigonometric functions. We will also explore the complex number system and trigonometric relationships.  It is a one-year course that terminates in a regents exam.  Passing this exam is a requirement for a NYS Advanced Regents Diploma.

Pre-Calculus (MPN11) Eligibility:  11th & 12th grade Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Math elective credits towards graduation. Pre-Calculus is an extension of Algebra II and Trigonometry Regents course, with the emphasis in Trigonometry, Limits, and introductory calculus topics.  All major areas covered in Algebra II are reinforced at a greater depth with additional applications aided by the use of calculators and computers. The course is designed to encompass all those topics necessary to be successful in a college calculus course. This course is offered to students that have taken and passed three years of high school mathematics.

AP Calculus (MCN11X) Eligibility:  11th & 12th grade Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Math elective credits towards graduation. In AP Calculus, students will acquire and apply various techniques in differential and integral calculus. Emphasis is placed on the application of those techniques in problem solving. This course requires a strong foundation in algebra and ends in taking the rigorous and comprehensive College Board AP Calculus AB exam. 


Health & Physical Education  (Students are required to take and pass eight semesters of physical education  and one semester of health education in order to graduate)

Physical Education (PPS81-88) Eligibility:  All students Course fulfillment:  Students are required to take 8 semesters of physical education. The physical education program at the Academy of American Studies is a comprehensive curriculum encompassing all aspects of physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility), nutrition, health and sports.  We also aim to promote an environment of cooperative learning and respect for all in our classroom.  The sports that are covered in our curriculum are Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, and Tennis.  New York City’s Fitnessgram program is also a part of our vigorous curriculum that challenges each student to be the best they can be, improve on their physical fitness throughout their four years, and maintain a health-enhancing level of lifelong fitness.

Health (PHS11) Eligibility:  11th & 12th graders Course fulfillment:  1 semester of health satisfies the NYS requirement for graduation. The goal of the Health Education course is to build a foundation of knowledge and an understanding of the resources available to help students make healthy decisions throughout their lifetime.  Areas to be explored include making communicating effectively; mental & emotional health; building self-esteem; the use, misuse & abuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco; peer pressure.  Emphasis is placed on how each individual must be responsible for his/her own health and behavior and must continually search for ways to better understand health maintenance and human interactions. 

 

Science (students must successfully complete a minimum of 6 credits of science as well as pass the Living Environment or Earth Science in order to graduate.  Students must pass an additional Science Regents to receive an Advanced Regents Diploma.)

Chemistry (SCN11) Eligibility:  Students who have completed two years of Regents Science Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Science credits towards graduation. Regents Chemistry is the study of matter and its behavior. There is a focus on chemical nomenclature, stoichiometry, atomic structure, bonding theories, thermochemistry, periodic properties, solution calculations, gas laws and the properties of solids and liquids. The course includes a mandatory laboratory component. Adeptness in mathematics is required.

College Biology (SBN11U) Eligibility:  Students who have finished two years of Regents Science Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Science elective credits towards graduation  The College Biology course follows the traditional curriculum. Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Survey of organisms and plants, as well as genetics and ecology are explored. During the first semester, students may choose to get three college credits through the St. Johns Advantage program at a much reduced cost.

Earth Science (SEN11, SEN11QC, SENLLQT) Eligibility:  9th & 10th graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Science credits towards graduation The Regents Earth Science class includes a survey of geology and geologic features, natural disasters, astronomy, atmospheric conditions, and topographical mapping. The topics are useful and relate to students everyday lives.  This course also includes a mandatory, hands-on, lab component in which students learn and use skills to help them further explore the concepts discussed in class.

AP Environmental Science (SWN11X) Eligibility:  Students who have finished two years of Regents Science Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Science elective credits towards graduation  AP Environmental Science is a rigorous, college-level course which explores significant environmental issues facing our planet today, as well as their causes, their impact on human life and possible resolutions.  This course integrates the disciplines of Chemistry, Earth Science and Biology with Economics, Politics and Ethics.  Major themes which will be explored include the idea that science is a process, that the earth itself is one interconnected system, how humans alter natural systems, and how our survival depends on the development of sustainable practices.  The course culminates with the AP Exam, which takes place in May.  As a result of taking this class, students may receive college credit as well as a life-long appreciation for earth’s natural systems and the role which humans play in them.

 Living Environment (SLN11, SLN11QC, SLN11QT) Eligibility:  9th graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Science credits towards graduation Regents Living Environment:  this is a general biology course that encompasses teachings about the cell and cell organization, human body systems, genetics and genetic engineering, reproduction and development, ecology and human impact on the environment. Students use concepts learned to aid in the process of inquiry and problem solving. This course also includes a mandatory, hands-on lab component in which students learn and use skills to help them further explore the concepts discussed in class.

Physics (SPN11)  Eligibility: Students who have completed successfully two years of Regents Science, Algebra 2 and Trigonometry.  Course fulfillment: This course satisfies two NYS Science credits towards graduation.  The Physical Setting/Physics is a one year course designed to have students understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical world.  The five core areas studied are mechanics, energy, electricity and magnetism, wave phenomena and atomic and nuclear physics.  In each core area students will be required to complete experiments and research projects.  Students must complete the minimum number of completed lab requirements to be admitted to The Physical Setting/Regents Physics Regents exam.

Practical Physics (SPN11QP)  Eligibility: Students who have completed successfully two years of Regents Science and at least one Algebra course.  Course fulfillment: This course satisfies two NYS Science credits towards graduation.  This course is designed as an alternative to Physical Setting/Physics.  Some mathematical skills are necessary, mostly algebra, however are more limited than in Regents Physics.  Topics covered include scientific notation, metric system measurement, graphing, kinetics, dynamics, harmonic motion, circular and projectile motion, laws of gravitation and energy.  There is no state-mandated laboratory component for this course.  However, this course is inquiry oriented and designed to develop essential skills and knowledge through direct laboratory experiences. Laboratory work will be incorporated within the regularly scheduled class period.

 

Social Studies (students must successfully complete Global History 1, Global History 2, US History, Participation in Government, and Economics  as well as earn passing grades on the Global Regents or US History Regents to graduate.  Additionally, Academy students must complete the sequence in Freshman & Sophomore American History, Law, and Senior Thesis)

Global Studies 1 (HGN21, HGN21QC, HGN21QT) Eligibility:  9th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Social Studies credits towards graduation. Global Studies I:  This is the first year of a two year survey course that will lead into the global studies regents at the end of 10th grade. The class will begin its journey with the Neolithic Revolution, moving through early and classical civilizations, then onto the rise of Europe, and lastly, closing the year off with the Age of Exploration. Aside from historical content, the class will strive to improve writing and communication that will foster critical thinking capabilities among each student.

Global Studies 2 (HGN22, HGN22QC, HGN22QT) Eligibility:  10th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies two NYS Social Studies credits towards graduation. Global Studies II:  This course begins with a brief review of the Age of Exploration and concludes with a look at our contemporary world. We will analyze the economic, social and political motives behind the last four centuries of world history, through the use of primary documents. At the end of this course, all students will be prepared for the Global Regents, given in June.

Freshman American History (HRN21) Eligibility:  9th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies elective credits towards graduation. Freshman American History:  This is the first of three years of American history offered at the Academy of American Studies.  The chronological focus of the course will begin with the Events Leading Up To the American Revolution (1760s) through the Reform Period of the 19th Century (1850s); including the following topics: the American Revolution, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Slavery, Abolition, Women’s Rights Movement, and Temperance Reform.  Some of the highlights of the course include: Thomas Jefferson Debate, Research Writing, Philadelphia and Boston Trips.  One major emphasis of the course will be writing; and the objective of the course will be to introduce students to the skills necessary to be good social studies students, and more importantly good writers.  The course will showcase the documents of America’s past: including the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. 

Sophomore American History (HRN22) Eligibility:  10th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies elective credits towards graduation. Sophomore American History:  This course will examine the political, social, and economic evolution of the American Republic from the era of Westward Expansion (Manifest Destiny) through the nation's transformation during the Civil War and Reconstruction, ultimately ending with the socio-economic transformation of America into the Industrial Age.

Junior American History (HUN11, HUN11QC, HUN11QT) Eligibility:  11th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies credits towards graduation. Junior American History  This course is for junior level students. It explores the history of the United States from approximately the turn of the 20th century to the present day. Subjects of study include American Expansion and Imperialism, World War One, the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression and the New Deal, World War Two, the Cold War, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the 1960s and the Conservative Revolution of the 1980s.  At the end of this course, all students will be prepared for the US History Regents, given in June.

Participation in Government (HVS11) Law (HLS11) Participation in Government/Senior Thesis (HVS11QST) Eligibility:  12th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 1 NYS Social Studies credits and 1 elective credit towards graduation. Participation in Government and Law is a course designed to give students an in-depth knowledge of our government and laws.  We trace the origins of our government, studying events and precedents set by our founders.   We then focus on the workings of our Congress, the Executive, the Bureaucracy and our Judiciary.   In the spring the focus is set on studying U.S. Supreme Court cases that have impacted our society.   The course also targets other tangential topics such as criminal law and the operation of New York City’s government. 

Economics (HES11) Eligibility:  12th graders Course fulfillment:  Economics is a NYS required course. Economics:  Students will gain a sense of the impact of economics on their lives through everyday decision-making. They will gain an understanding of major economic concepts and systems that affects the decision-making process. Students will have the opportunity to develop and apply the skills needed to make informed and well-reasoned economic decisions. This will be emphasized using fundamental micro-economic concepts that students may use on a practical, individual level, but also within the framework of the U.S. and global economies.

AP Macroeconomics (HEN11X) Eligibility:  12th graders Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  AP Macroeconomics satisfied the NYS requirement for economics. AP Macroeconomics:  Students will gain exposure to the basic economic principles that govern their behavior in a free enterprise system and understand the choices that are made and the impact those choices have on an aggregate basis. Through this study of macroeconomics students will master a variety of topics exclusive to this discipline such as economic growth & productivity, unemployment, inflation, the business cycle, the financial sector, as well as the ability to measure the performance of the economy based on these many factors. This, including learning about the basic concepts of supply & demand, will prepare students to master the material needed to take the A.P. Exam in May.

Economics and International Business (HEN11) Eligibility:  12th graders Course fulfillment:  International Business satisfied the NYS requirement for economics. The overall theme of the course is to examine the different functions of business and how different nations around the world conduct business matters as compared to the United States.  Concepts will include:  marketing, management, finance, supply chain, entrepreneurship and negotiations.  The spring semester will include a senior thesis project.

AP US History (HUN11X) Eligibility:  11th Graders Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies credits towards graduation.  AP US History is a challenging course designed for student’s equivalent to that of a freshman college survey curse and if completed successfully, may earn you college credits. This course is offered to Juniors and covers the colonial period through modern day. The course concludes with preparation and review for the A.P. Exam in U.S. History, which is given in early May..

AP US Government & Politics (HVN11X) Eligibility:  12th Graders Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies elective credits towards graduation. AP United States Government:  This course is designed to teach students how people behave politically when interacting with the various institutions and levels of government within our federal system. Students will learn how these interactions shape public policy within our representative democracy. This extensive understanding of American political behavior, civil liberties, governmental structure, and constitutional principles will eventually prepare the students to take the Advanced Placement United States Government Exam in May.

AP European History (HGN22X) Eligibility:  10th Graders Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies credits towards graduation. AP European History:  This course is specifically designed to cover a very extensive time period, starting with 1450 and concluding with the present day. The course is divided into two semesters: in the fall, we will cover the Renaissance through the French Revolution while, in the spring, we will cover the Industrial Revolution through the growth of European Unity. This course is taught on a college level, which necessitates that it be writing intensive however, it is also built upon class discussions.  The course concludes with preparation and review for the AP exam, which is given in early May.   AP Human Geography (PHN11X) Eligibility:  12th Graders Note:  This course is weighted as 1.1 on a student's transcript average.  To receive this additional credit, students MUST take the advanced placement test. AP Human Geography (HPN11X) is designed to be a college introductory geography class. It aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of human geography and provide a geographic framework for the analysis of current world problems.  The course develops students’ ability to ask geographic questions; acquire, organize, and analyze geographic information; and answer geographic questions.  This class helps us understand the most basic but yet very complex human geography questions: how and why people live and work where they do?  The major focus of the class is on the standards established by the College Board for AP Human Geography.

 Research Project in American History (HQN11QJ) Eligibility:  10th Graders Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies elective credits towards graduation. Research Project in American History is a project-based history class following the National History Day model.  National History Day makes history come alive for students by engaging them in the discovery of the historical, cultural and social experiences of the past through hands-on experiences and presentations.  Following a class history fair, students will participate in the New York City History Day contest where they will share their research in an effort to advance to the New York State contest.  Following the completion of the History Day curriculum, the class will follow an abbreviated sophomore US curriculum examining the political, social, and economic evolution of the American Republic from the era of Westward Expansion (Manifest Destiny) through the nation's transformation during the Civil War and Reconstruction, ultimately ending with the socio-economic transformation of America into the Industrial Age.

Senior Thesis (HQS11)  Eligibility:  12th graders Course fulfillment:  This elective course is required to receive Academy honors certification on your diploma. At the Academy of American Studies, seniors are required to complete a Senior Thesis as part of the American history program.  This course is designed to promote academic growth, independent learning, and enhance college ready skills.  The Senior Thesis includes a research paper, a portfolio, and a presentation with an audio/visual component to a panel of judges.  This course is specifically designed to utilize and strengthen a variety of skills, but specifically focusing on research, writing, and public speaking.

World History Survey (HQN11QWH, HQN22QWH) Eligibility:  Students who need to build skills in order to pass the Global Studies Regents Exam Course fulfillment:  This course satisfies 2 NYS Social Studies elective credits towards graduation.

World History Survey is a one year review of both Freshman and Sophomore Global History & Geography. In an effort to support students who have not yet passed the Global Regents given in both January and June, this class will review important terms spanning from the Neolithic Revolution all the way to our contemporary world. Students will practice critical thinking through the use of primary source documents. Global map skills will be used to analyze the cause and effect of a location that led to revolutions, empires and conflict.
